Hi.  My name is Delores Paulk. When I was 20 years old I left the peaceful, rolling hills of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for the big city of Philadelphia.

I made the move because I felt called to do something out of the ordinary. I remember telling my boyfriend, “I don’t want to be a ordinary, run-of-the-mill, Christian. I want to do something!”

Ordinary would have been to graduate from high school, get a job, get married and start raising a family. But I surprised my family by being the first one to move out of my parent’s house without getting married.

When I did get married some years later, it was to someone different from anyone who had ever married into the Buckwalter family. I was white. He was black. I was Protestant. He was Catholic. I was country. He was city.  I came from a large family. He came from an orphanage. Quite frankly, nobody expected the marriage to last.

July 26th we celebrated out 36th wedding anniversary.
